From 1980 to 2004, the NCAA Rifle Championship consisted of 120 shots by each competitor in smallbore, and 40 shots per competitor in air rifle. Since 2005, the championship has consisted of 60 shots for both smallbore and air rifle, equalling a total of 120 shots per team member.
Since there are only 23 Division I schools, 4 Division II schools, and 7 Division III schools that sponsor rifle, the NCAA holds only a single, all-division championship. There are 4 men's teams, 16 women's teams and 20 mixed teams.
A rifle scholarship can cover many, sometimes all, of the costs associated with earning a university degree. In return, the student-athlete will represent the university in their respective sport and maintain a good level of academic performance.
