Choosing a College

FirstPoint USA has expert advice on choosing a university that’s the right fit, but here are some general guidelines.

The best chance of admissions

Competition is tough at some universities, with only around 10% of applicants making it to the top schools. But we can help you select a well-rounded list of universities to give you every chance of a place.

Academic opportunities

You don’t have to decide your major when you apply, but if you know what you want to study, make sure your university offers your preferred subject. Also, consider the student-to-faculty ratio, undergraduate research opportunities, honours or scholars’ programmers, and whether you can do internships for academic credit.

Location and campus

You’ll be living at university for four years, so make sure you’re happy with your surroundings. As well as location, you should ask whether your university is close to related internships, work experience and networking opportunities.

Campus living

Every university has its own culture, so choose one that suits your expectations. You may want to be somewhere with a wholly academic focus, or you might prefer a greater balance between college work and sports, clubs or other extracurricular experiences.

Cost and funding

Fees vary between colleges, not to mention the cost of living, so make sure you’re clear on the tuition costs and expenses. And if you’re looking for extra help with funding, most universities have a financial aid page on their website.

Accreditation and reputation

We have relationships with 2,900 US colleges and the chances are, you’ve not heard of 99% of them. But a good way to establish their reputation is to see if they’ve received a regional accreditation recognised by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (www.chea.org ). Or check if the university is in the US Department of Education’s Database of Accredited Programs and Institutions (www.ed.gov).
