Student-Athlete Stories: From Dunfermline to Texas, Murray Fraser’s College Soccer Journey

6 min read

At FirstPoint USA, we love sharing stories of individuals who have successfully navigated the path of becoming a student-athlete.

Murray Fraser, a college placement specialist with FirstPoint USA, has an inspiring journey that took him from Dunfermline, Scotland, to Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and eventually to his role with us.

From Dunfermline to San Antonio: A New Beginning

Murray’s journey began in Dunfermline, Scotland, where his passion for soccer first took root. Like many young athletes, Murray dreamed of playing at a high level while pursuing a quality education. His opportunity came when he was recruited to play men’s soccer at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

“Trinity University was the perfect fit for me,” Murray recalls. “The academics were strong, the soccer program was highly competitive, and the coach was an NCAA legend. Plus, the weather in Texas was a welcome change from Scotland!”

For Murray, the move to Texas was more than just a change of scenery—it was the start of a new chapter in his life, one that would challenge him academically, athletically, and personally.

Life as a Student-Athlete at Trinity University

At Trinity, Murray played as a winger, primarily on the right and left sides, with occasional stints in a central role. His days were packed with training sessions, competitive matches, and a full academic schedule.

“The lifestyle of a student-athlete is intense but rewarding,” Murray explains. “You’re training every day, playing matches throughout the season, and balancing it all with classes and coursework. It’s like living the life of a professional athlete while earning a degree.”

Murray studied business administration with a concentration in marketing. Like many students, he started college undecided about his major. It took him about a year of exploring different classes before he found his passion in business.

Choosing the Right College: More Than Just Division Status

Now this may not apply to every player, but I was fortunate to have a decision to make between 15-20 colleges. There were a few teams at D1, some D2 and D3 programs as well as NAIA. While the lure of D1 was attractive, it is not the be all and end all. For me, D3 made the most sense, due to the facilities at Trinity, the standard of soccer being run very similar or even equal to a D1 standard, and the coach being a renowned legend at all levels of college soccer. The standard of academics should always be the main focus, with Trinity being ranked one of the strongest universities in the southern United States, it provided an education and academic experience that I would not have received at the D2 or even D1 options I had.

Above all, the relationship I had built with the coach was probably the main reason to commit to Trinity. Feeling valued as a young man and prospective student-athlete, the coach was always reaching out to see if there was anything they could do to get my acceptance, which made my difficult decision a lot easier. I was put in touch with many members of staff and was able to gain as much information as possible to ultimately make that decision and feel confident about it.

Highlights and Lifelong Friendships

One of the standout moments of Murray’s college soccer career was winning the conference championship four years in a row. “We only lost five regular-season games in four years,” he proudly shares. “Winning was definitely a highlight, but the best part was the relationships I built with my teammates, professors, and other students.”

For Murray, the bonds formed during his time at Trinity are what he cherishes most. “Being part of a strong team culture and creating lifelong friendships—that’s the best thing about being a student-athlete. Those relationships stay with you forever.”

The Transition from Texas to FirstPoint USA

After graduating from Trinity, Murray’s journey brought him to FirstPoint USA, where he now works as a college placement specialist. His experience as a student-athlete has given him a unique perspective that he uses to help other young athletes navigate the recruitment process.

“I understand what it’s like to balance academics and athletics, and I know how important it is to find the right fit,” Murray says. “That’s why I’m passionate about helping student-athletes find the best opportunities for them—both on and off the field.”

Advice for Aspiring Student-Athletes

Murray’s journey from Dunfermline to Texas and beyond offers valuable insights for prospective student-athletes. He emphasizes the importance of keeping an open mind and exploring all available options.

“I’ll always encourage every athlete to talk to every single coach that reaches out; this gives you a full overview of each opportunity and gives you information about the soccer program and school that you may not find online.

If a coach is doing everything possible to recruit you, but you are not engaging, that opportunity will disappear, and you may be put in a position where you are left speaking with coaches that might not be fully invested.”

“There’s no right or wrong way to do it,” Murray says. “Every student-athlete will have their own pathway. It’s important to talk to as many coaches as possible, learn about each opportunity, and make the decision that’s best for you athletically, academically, and financially.”

He also advises against being too focused on one school or area. “Being open-minded allows you to explore more opportunities and make the best decision for you and your family.”
