FirstPoint USA client, Michael O’Malley, has recently committed to a rugby scholarship at Central Washington University. Michael has previously played rugby with Ratoath RFC and Ratoath College, and is currently playing with Castleknock College. Here, Michael shares with us his experiences of obtaining a scholarship, making the decision to study at CWU, and what he is looking forward to most throughout his scholarship.
Michael tells us he made the decision to attend a university in the US as he heard about the huge growth of rugby there, especially at a collegiate level. It was from here that Michael contacted us at FirstPoint USA. He tells us that throughout the process, he was able to learn more about American universities and their impressive rugby structures, which made it clear that this was something he wished to pursue.

However, he stated, “the advice and guidance from Brendan at FirstPoint USA was invaluable. The process was a bit confusing but FirstPoint helped clarify any questions or concerns I had at each step.”
Michael tells us that when the scholarship offer from CWU first arose, he checked out the college online, and was very impressed with what he saw; from their rugby setup to the schools achievements. Michael states he then had a Skype call with the CWU’s rugby Head Coach, Todd Thornley. It was from then that Michael knew that the culture and rugby philosophy at CWU was a perfect fit for himself.
Upon arriving in the US and beginning his university life, Michael tells us that he is thoroughly looking forward to experiencing college life and the American culture. As well as this, he can't wait to get over there to get on the rugby pitch and give it his best.

He stated that he hopes to still be playing rugby, and to have reached a high level. However, is also looking forward to having a degree behind him to provide him with some other options.
