Mairi Fletcher is the newest field hockey player to join our ranks here at FirstPoint USA and has recently committed to a field hockey scholarship at Michigan State University. Hailing from Glasgow, Mairi has attended Hutchesons Grammar School since Primary 1 and has told us she has thoroughly enjoyed her time there.
Mairi tell us that she has been playing hockey for the past seven years and has spent the last four seasons as part of the Scottish setup; playing for U16’s, U18’s and U21’s. Furthermore, Mairi also plays for Clydesdale Western hockey club who have recently had a very successful season in both the Scottish League and Scottish Cup. To date, Mairi states her favourite sporting experience to be playing in front of a home crowd at the Europeans last summer, stating that it was really good fun and a great overall experience.
Mairi told us that her desire to go to America to study stemmed from having friends that have undertaken the same experience, and many more that are signed up in preparation to do so. Mairi said that after having looked into studying in the states she thought the whole experience looked amazing. As Mairi also has family members out in the US, she said everything about an American sports scholarship just seemed to fit together perfectly for her.
Choosing which school to attend is a huge decision, Mairi told why she chose to commit to Michigan State University opposed to anywhere else…
“The coaches at Michigan are amazing. They were so welcoming and kind. After I went out and visited, I fell in love with the campus and the atmosphere there, I didn't think anywhere else could top it.”
Upon heading out to the states, Mairi tells us that she is, of course, looking forward to playing hockey but, also to having the opportunity to travel all over America and live the college experience that, in Scotland, we only get to witness on TV.
Finally, when we asked Mairi where she sees herself being in ten years time, she told us she was still unsure but, hopes to be working in California or Colorado whilst still playing and enjoying hockey.
We’re sure Mairi will have an amazing time at Michigan State Univrsity and we wish her the best of luck. We will keep you updated on Mairi’s time in the states through our various social media platforms.
