Jorge Sambu Hits The Headlines!

In 2011, the youngster from Manor Park, east London, completed his sixth-form, and showed his talent for football while captaining the school's team from 2009-2011. Jorge got his break to go stateside by taking part in a football event (-Soccer Showcase 2011) organised by FirstPoint USA at David Beckham’s Academy in Greenwich, southeast London. Event leaders rated the 19-year-old’s soccer skills highly enough to send footage of him in action to universities throughout North America. It worked, and later in September Jorge will commence his studies in the Empire State, having chosen to attend Bryant & Stratton College in Rochester. The money from his bursary will support the young footballer in his studies and training, also as part of the scholarship he receives accommodation from the institution founded in 1854. In addition, Jorge has been awarded £2,000 by Newham Talent Trust. It will not be long before Newham’s ex-pupil jets off to the other side of the Atlantic, yet he made time to say goodbye to the college’s sports staff, whose department was recently given sports leaders UK Leadership Academy status. “I’m really excited to be getting closer to my goal of becoming a professional football player”, said Jorge. “I’ve not been to America before so I’m a bit nervous but mainly just really looking forward to a new challenge. “The sports academy has been so supportive with my application to university even though I left the college a year ago.” The school’s sports manager Beth Harris was delighted to see her old pupil embark on a new chapter in his life. “Jorge’s calm and professional attitude both on and off the pitch was invaluable”, she said. “We wish him all the best for his future and are very proud of him.” FirstPoint USA would also like to congratulation Jorge Sambu on his soccer scholarship and wish him every success in the USA.
